Living high in downtown

The Seattle Times is running an article today on plans to build residential skyscrapers in downtown Seattle on Second Avenue between Pike and Pine. The article includes some background on Seattle’s current zoning laws, how they came to be that way, and what effect they have on the look of the city.

We’d love to see a more vibrant residential presence in downtown Seattle. What do you think?

I think the prices still have to come down. ;)

Heh. Or our salaries have to go _way_ up. :-P

Downtown Seattle does need more residential development, and that area of downtown is an interesting place for it, since it’s right between Pike Place Market and the downtown retail area. It’s improving, but that Pike Street corridor is still rough enough that a lot of people avoid it and go a block north or south when they walk from the Market to Westlake Center. Hopefully the new towers will include the types of public spaces at ground-level that will make it better to walk through there.

Tom - Exactly right. Parts of the downtown area can be downright depressing and dreary to walk through. I think Seattle can do better.
